With the holiday travel season rapidly approaching, it might be wise to take a few moments to consider some of the most common ways to keep your home safe while you visit relatives and friends across the country or around the world. Statistically speaking, you’re at a higher risk of a break-in while you’re away for an extended period, but there are five simple things you can do to help ensure that your fall and winter holidays stay merry and bright:

  1. Arrange to stop your newspaper delivery. Nothing gives a bigger signal to criminals than a pile of papers on your front door.
  2. Have a neighbor or friend collect your mail for you while you’re gone. If that’s not feasible, contact the post office to halt delivery until you return.
  3. Notify the police that you will be out of town. Many municipalities have the ability to dispatch community patrols or officers who can take extra time to make sure your home stays safe. Also, if there are any incidents in your neighborhood or at your property, they can plan their response accordingly.

Keeping a 13,000-square-foot real estate office with about 100 desks, offices and meeting rooms filled with successful agents can be quite a challenge.

Unless you’re Chuck Sackett, manager of the La Mesa/El Cajon office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. With a real estate career launched in 1972, Chuck is chief recruiter for the sprawling agency overlooking Interstate 8. He came out of retirement a few years ago to bring strong leadership to the brokerage, and hasn’t left since.

“Recruiting is a major part of my responsibilities,” he said. ““I really enjoy that part of it. It’s a different day every day. Having so many people in the office, they’ve all got something they might need assistance with. So it’s fun to be able to help them out. It’s not necessarily that they need the answer, it’s that they need somebody to ratify that they’re doing the right thing. And giving new people the opportunity to make a pretty good living is very gratifying. You can do it out here if you apply yourself.”

To help make the holidays brighter for needy families throughout their community, the Orange County chapter of The Charitable Foundation of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties will hold a benefit on their behalf Nov. 13.

Ladies Night Out takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. at Marbella Country Club in San Juan Capistrano. The event will bring together agents, staff and clients for an evening of fun, food, drinks, and music to raise money for various Orange County charities.

A portion of the evening’s donations will benefit the Children’s Bureau of Orange County. Toys for children from birth to 16 years will be collected for a “Toy Shop’” drive, where gifts will be distributed to needy families. Parents will be able to “shop” for toys for their children to receive on Christmas morning.

Although the digital age has ushered in a new wave of convenient online shopping, a few luxury products still have to be experienced in person to truly appreciate. For far too long, fragrance shopping was confined to these outdated notions, forcing people to sojourn to their local shops and pick through dozens of products designed to appeal to the broadest number of consumers.

However, the forward-thinking people at Commodity Goods had the vision to provide their customers a unique perfume-purchasing experience by marrying the notions of creatively focused products with the all-around ease of buying online. Their premium scents combine a legacy of French fragrance heritage with the contemporary sensibility of the modern day, with such perfumes as Rain, Mimosa and Pinot for ladies, and Whiskey, Cane and Oak for gentleman.
