Time hasn’t exactly stood still in the Heritage Valley. But it’s about as close you can get to an earlier version of California, just 45 miles north of Los Angeles.

Blessed with mostly sunny days year round, the valley in Ventura County is home to many historical and recreational attractions, primarily in Fillmore–“the last best small town in Southern California”–and Santa Paula–“citrus capital of the world” thanks to its miles of lemon, orange, and avocado orchards.

Don’t let the rows of Harleys out front intimidate you. Cook’s Corner is a biker bar, but you don’t have to ride on two wheels to feel welcome at the oldest roadhouse in south Orange County. Once fairly isolated, the laidback landmark in Trabuco Canyon is now just a few hundred yards from rows of upscale suburban homes, restaurants, and shopping centers. And it’s a good neighbor, beckoning all walks of life.

The place got its start in 1926, when Earl Cook, son of the surrounding lands’ owner, converted a cabin into a restaurant for local miners and ranchers. He turned it into a bar after Prohibition ended in 1933. Right after World War II, he bought an old mess hall from the decommissioned Santa Ana Army Air Base and launched the tavern. A Santa Ana bike-accessories owner bought the joint in 1970 and shaped it into the old-fashioned roadhouse it remains today.

renting out your home

Do a bit of research and determine a rental price for your home. Also consider if utility charges will be part of the rent or paid separately by the tenant. Before posting your home, determine the price of your security deposit.

When is the best time to list your home

The information regarding the best time to list your home is endless. Some say early in the year is best, while others say winter is the perfect time. So how do you decide which season is right for your market? There are pros and cons to selling during each season. Although spring remains a popular time to list a home, it may not be the best time for you.

Spring
Mid-March to late-May is great time to list your home because temperatures in Southern California are still cool enough to allow for a stress-free move for both the buyer and the seller, compared to mid-summer where it can become uncomfortable to be hauling boxes. Additionally, spring brings a change in sunshine patterns. With more daylight, your home will look more attractive in the sunshine and clear skies and more buyers will be out after work/in the evening looking for homes.

Southern California gardening trends

Even though California might have some of the most beautiful weather anywhere, and an almost year-round growing season, every gardener still has to endure a number of potentially plant-destroying situations. Variances in the quality of soil, pests, and lack of (or too much) sunlight or water can devastate even the best-laid plans and gardens.

However, the good people at GroGreen Box have come up with a solution as innovative as it is effective: raised-garden box kits. Lovingly handcrafted out of genuine California redwood, these planters provide an attractive as well as functional way to grow and nurture almost any type of fruit or vegetable year round.
