Celebrate youth culture at this year’s Multicultural Day Parade, held by Continuing the Dream at Fairplex, formerly Los Angeles County Fairgrounds, in Pomona. Participating communities including Pomona, Claremont, San Bernardino, and many others will showcase their talents in drill team, equestrian, color guard, marching band, and more. Visitors also can enjoy a float parade and competition, and a variety of vendors. Continuing the Dream was recognized in 2007 as a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation employees’ community’s youth group. It’s that time of year again! Bring out the bunting, shine up the seats, and fire up the grills, because it’s time for Opening Day 2015–the day of the year when children of all ages drift on down to their local ballparks to celebrate the start of baseball season.

When the San Diego Padres take the field against the 2014 World Series champions San Francisco Giants for a four-game home stand beginning April 9, they will do so with one of the strongest starting lineups since they moved into Petco Park in 2004, thanks to team management increasing payroll to a club-record $94 million to help acquire talent in the off-season. Since the additions of Justin Upton, Matt Kemp, Derek Norris, and Will Middlebrooks, the Pads are looking to compete with division rivals Los Angeles Dodgers and Giants, and even be contend for the National League pennant.

This offseason, the Angels spent $15 million to add Roberto Baldoquin to their starting lineup. Acquiring the 20-year-old Cuban shortstop was seen as quite the coup by many experts throughout the baseball world, for even though Baldoquin has yet to prove himself in the majors, the Angels were willing to pay a large tax on top of his salary, in addition to capping their salary options on any more international contracts for the next two years.

Things to do in Lompoc

Ever had the urge to get away from it all in a place that’s not too far from urban life? Lompoc just might be your spot.

By the way, it’s not pronounced “Lom-pock” (as in pocket ), which W.C. Fields called it in his radio shows and the 1940 movie “The Bank Dick.” Lompocals have always called it “Lom-poke.”

Situated among low rolling hills on state Route 246 about 10 miles from the coast, and an hour or so each way to Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo via Highway 101, the town of 60,000 has only about five hotels. You can relax in your room or make it home base for visits to historic La Purisima Mission, miles of hiking and biking trails, golfing, motorsports, and horseback riding areas, most for little or no cost.
