What:
Tradition continues in Hermosa Beach during the 21st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Join an estimated 30,000 attendees for a day of Irish celebration. Nearly 100 businesses, organizations, and local marching bands participate in the seven-block parade. Irish-themed festivities include bagpipers, floats, and even a few Irish Setters. Stop by the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce office to buy a T-shirt for $15 to show your support the day of the parade.

Where:
Parade begins near city hall on Valley Drive, continues onto Pier Avenue, and ends at the corner of Hermosa Avenue and 10th Street.

Redondo Beach kite festival

What:
Fun takes flight as the Redondo Beach Kite Festival 2015 fills skies at Redondo Beach Pier. Join the competition and see if your rig can take top prize at one of Southern California’s longest-running kite festivals. The only rules for entering your kite are that it can be made of any material, and can be any size, but it must be able to fly on the wind. And to have fun, of course.

Everyone from professionals to kids to the kid in all of us is invited to attend and compete. There’ll also be a yo-yo performance and competition, and a hot-dog-on-a-stick eating contest.

Healthy eating in LA

Everyone wants to eat healthier. One of the problems with that is that even when we do put healthier foods on our shelves or in our refrigerators, they often come replete with chemicals and preservatives designed to keep them fresh during their transit from field to shipping warehouse to store shelves to your plate.

LA events

Before everyone was busy photographing concerts and clubs with their smartphones, L.A.’s live-music scene wasn’t that well-documented. Venues were dark, cameras and flash usually were prohibited, and photography was generally unwelcome.

Rock bands, the recording industry, and audiences were flourishing from the late ’70s to late ’80s, but not much of the lively era was being captured for posterity. So several professional photographers decided to head out a few nights a week to snap images of the most interesting and entertaining new groups making the rounds. Mötley Crüe, the Bangles, Eazy-E, and Black Flag are just a few they photographed to accompany reviews in the alternative and, occasionally, mainstream press.
