What:
Whether you’re of Irish heritage or just love all things Celtic, San Diego’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Irish celebration is an event the whole family can enjoy. Start your morning at the parade—the largest west of the Mississippi—and view more than 120 entries including bagpipers, high school marching bands, police and fire departments, floats, dancing groups, marching and equestrian units, clowns, dignitaries and honorees, representatives from Ireland, antique cars, and more. The theme of this year’s parade is “Celebrating Faith and Freedom.” After the procession, head over to Balboa Park for live entertainment on two stages. There’ll be Irish Step Dancers, Irish folksingers, craft booths, food booths, a beer garden, and a kids’ zone with rides.

San Diego events

What:
After the tragic passing of high school athlete and scholar Chelsea King while she was out on a training run in 2010, the San Diego running community decided to honor her memory and finish her run for her. Turnout was so high that her parents decided to repeat the event each year to help spread the word about “Chelsea’s Law” and commemorate their daughter’s legacy.

Now her memory is celebrated each year as the Finish Chelsea’s Run 5k Run/Walk, a charity event that benefits the Chelsea’s Light Foundation Sunflower Scholarship Fund. The fund helps provide scholarships for college-bound teens throughout San Diego that embody Chelsea’s dual focuses of academic and athletic devotions. To date, this fundraising drive has provided over $85,000 in scholarships to deserving students around the county.

Carlsbad flower fields

If traffic slows on Interstate 5 near Carlsbad between March 1 and May 10, it’s often because drivers are sneaking a peek at The Flower Fields. The 50-acre site on a hillside overlooking the Pacific is in full bloom then, and who can blame motorists for wanting to catch a glimpse of the spectacular display?

Row upon row of multicolored gladioli, ranunculi, petunias and other flowers carpet the site, which attracts more than 125,000 visitors annually. There’s plenty to do besides walking through the fields, soaking in the beauty and snapping selfies.

St. Baldrick's shave-a-thon

What:
If you’ve ever wanted to see what it would be like to shave your head, now is the time. And you can help a great cause while you’re at it. Come to The Commons Bar in downtown San Diego to celebrate the Seventh Annual St. Baldrick’s Shave-a-Thon to support childhood cancer research with an afternoon of fun and exciting activities. A $10 donation gets you in the door, and $20 includes a T-shirt and raffle ticket. All proceeds benefit St. Baldrick’s Foundation. And, if you’re brave enough, make your dome aerodynamic to show support and solidarity for the brave children who face cancer every day. Last year the event collected $35,000, and $50,000 is this year’s goal. Can you help them reach it?
