Although the kitchen is considered to be the heart of the home, the primary bedroom may be the most important room in your entire house.
Your bedroom is where you go to recharge and refresh after a long day, in preparation for yet another day to come. It’s where you get ready for pretty much everything you do, so the entire room should feel like your own personal sanctuary.
After you define your home decor style, consider some of these key features and upgrades that will make the bedroom your favorite room in the house.
The centerpiece of any bedroom is, of course, the bed! Highlight the most important piece with a statement headboard that will set the mood and style of the room. You can go as large and as bold as you like, or stick to something a little more traditional. If you’d like to get a little creative, consider creating a gallery wall or accent wall to crown your plump pillows.
There’s no better place to get cozy than in your own room, so make sure it’s filled with lots and lots of soft objects. Throw blankets and pillows are a must, but don’t forget a large rug and blackout curtains for those days you get to sleep in past the sun. To finish it off, get a big fluffy robe and matching slippers that will be easy to slide into when you’re not quite ready to get dressed for the day.
It’s important to have lighting options in your bedroom. For mornings where you really need to wake up, you might want extra bright lighting. Or, if you have different sleeping schedules than your partner, or just like to dim the lights in order to wind down and read a book before bed, you may want some softer lighting options.
We suggest adding a large bright light to the center of your ceiling, preferably one that has dimmer settings, to be your main source of light. When those overhead bulbs seems like too much for your tired eyes, turn on smaller table or floor lamps that can be used individually without lighting the entire room, or to add even more light to your room when needed.
The last thing you want to have to do right before drifting off to sleep, is get up and turn off your lights. Consider investing in remote-controlled or smart lamps so all you have to do is press a button or tell your lights to turn off.
It’s also a great idea to set your smart lights to gradually brighten or turn on in the morning when your alarm is set to go off, and then set them to dim or turn off at certain times at night. This will help you and your body know when it’s time to wake up or wind down.
If you have the space for it, consider adding a small seating area. Especially if you host a lot of guests or have children whose friends often take over your living room, it can be nice to have a quiet space to sit, relax, and even watch some TV without interruption.
A little love seat or an armchair or two with an ottoman is all you need. Section your seating area off with a small area rug and add a side table so it feels like a sitting room within a room.
Whether it be your phone or your mind, you need a space to fully recharge. Because your recharging station will hold things you may want to easily access once you’ve tucked yourself in, a medium to large nightstand table with plenty of storage is ideal! Things to consider for your recharging station: books, notebooks and pens, chargers for your devices, hand lotions, lip balms, an eye mask, a coaster for beverages, a speaker or alarm clock, and whatever else you need at an arm’s reach.
The last thing to do is add some personality! Your bedroom should be filled with things that make you feel happy and at peace, whether it’s photos of family and friends, custom artwork, indoor plants, or a prized collection on display. Consider what objects you want to be surrounded by every day you wake up and every night you drift off to sleep. If it doesn’t bring you joy, store it out of sight or in another room.
