The Wolff residence, a transcendent masterpiece, is listed for sale in Los Angeles for $6,500,000 with Santa Monica agents George Salazar and Tilsia Acosta of the Wilshire Team.
The midcentury home was built in 1961 by internationally famous Los Angeles-based architect John Lautner, AIA, who studied under his mentor, Frank Lloyd Wright.
Designed on an almost vertical lot just above Sunset Plaza, the home is a designated Cultural Monument and a California State Monument, making it eligible for Mills Act tax benefits.
The main residence consists of one bedroom and 1.5 bathrooms, totaling 1,664 square feet. It shares a copper-lined roof with the adjoining guest house, commissioned in 1970, which has three rooms, two full bathrooms, and totals 1,169 square feet, but no kitchen.
Described as Lautner’s homage to Wright’s Fallingwater, the architect employed stone, glass, and copper throughout. The living room on the top floor is wrapped by two 16-foot walls of glass, bringing in views of Los Angeles and beyond.
Outside on the terrace, a monumental eucalyptus traverses all floors, partially embraced by a side rock wall as tall as the entire residence.
The bottom floor features a pool that allows you to float away from the residence and peer down on the city below.
Thanks to Lautner’s masterful selection of materials, the residence feels very private, grounded in nature while at the same time inspires creativity.
John Lautner (1911-94) apprenticed in the mid-1930s with Frank Lloyd Wright, then opened his own practice in 1938 in Los Angeles, where he worked for the remainder of his career. He practiced primarily in California, and the majority of his works were residential. Lautner is perhaps best remembered for his contribution to the development of the Midcentury Architecture and the Googie style, as well as for several Atomic Age houses he designed in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His dramatic and photogenic spaces have been frequently used as film, TV and photography locations.
