Weidners Gardens

Did you know that poinsettias come in more than just one color? In fact, there are about 30 varieties beside the red, white and pink Euphorbia Pulcherrima that has become one of the world’s most popular Christmas floral displays.

You can learn a lot more about poinsettias from the ground up – literally – November 22 and 23 at Weidners Gardens in Encinitas. That’s when the six-acre, 41-year-old nursery will hold its annual Poinsettia Greenhouse Tours, and you’re invited.

“The tour is a behind-the-scenes look at how poinsettias are grown, from start to finish,” said Kalim Owens, general manager at Weidners, which ships about 30,000 poinsettias to retail and wholesale locations during the holiday season.

“We’ll take everyone inside the greenhouse to see how we mix our soil and grow our plants. We’ll also give some history about the poinsettia and how it came to be a Christmas favorite. The tour is one of our most popular events of the year and it’s free of charge as always.”
