With nearly $29,000 raised for a new bike for Lance Weir, a Marine Corps Reservist who was paralyzed in a diving accident, the Lancelot Ride supported by Carlos Gutierrez of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, The Charitable Foundation, Hall of Famer Bill Walton and many other volunteers was a tremendous success. A picturesque, two-day cycling tour through Temecula’s wine country, the event featured a free wine tasting, live music, dinner, and a massage for each participant.

Weir is known for his tireless efforts to serve the community. As a part of Operation Rebound, he often participates in events such as the Million Dollar Challenge, a 600-plus mile bike ride down the California coast to benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation. This fall will be the third consecutive year that he will be competing in the event with Team Lori and Bill Walton.

In spite of the almost constant difficulties presented by Weir’s 70 pound tandem bike, Team Lori and Bill Walton never failed to complete the race or serve as a constant source of inspiration for everyone involved. Last year they were the top fundraiser, with over $160,000; they are hoping to exceed that total this year.

The need for a new bike for Weir was reinforced when his current bike met its doom 25 miles into the first day of the event. Luckily the totals for the event surpassed the funds required, so Jose Doval and Matt Hoffman, with help from Holland Cycles, will now be proceeding with the building of new custom bike for Weir.

There’s nothing quite like summertime in San Diego. The days are longer, the nights are more beautiful and the event list can’t be beat. While there’s an endless list of things to see and do, there are a few events in particular that you don’t want to miss. One of those is coming up on July 17! Mark your calendars and start planning your bets because Opening Day at the Del Mar racetrack is on its way!

Whether you are a race veteran or you’ve never been to the tracks, this is an event for everyone. Grab a signature Del Martini and settle in for the afternoon spectacle. There are 10 races on Thursday, July 17th starting at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Head over to The Party for the ultimate Opening Day experience. You can buy tickets in advance for $30 per person. Tickets include access to the microbrew beer garden, gourmet food trucks, a large private area with a big-screen video board, photo booths and prize giveaways. (more…)

SD-Fair

If you live in the San Diego area, especially the communities north of downtown, you likely already know it’s that time of year again; time for the San Diego County Fair (formerly known as the Del Mar Fair).  Although traffic this time of year often becomes the bane of many our existence, the fair has a multitude of events catering to all age groups. This year we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite events and activities. We hope to see you at the Fab Fair this year, it runs June 7th– July 6th.

  1. No fair experience is complete without indulging in food concoctions you’ve never seen or even dared to dream of before. If you only have one day to go to the fair this year, consider choosing July 5th and invest in pants with an elastic waist. For all the pork lovers out there, Bacon Fest is not to be missed. The event features creative dishes from some of the best chefs nationwide.
  2. Looking to fill up on liquids instead of protein? The fair has you covered with not one, but two events. The wine festival takes place on June 14th and offers up unlimited 1 ounce wine samples. Give yourself a week of recovery and head back for the beer festival running June 20-22nd and featuring over 400 beers. Designated drivers are strongly encouraged.
  3. Has the wedding bug hit close to home? Whether you’re the bride-to-be or the maid of honor, this event is calling to you. My Big Fair Wedding Day takes place on June 29th and covers all things wedding related. Industry professionals are there to help you learn how to plan your perfect wedding and see the latest in wedding trends. If you have nuptials in your future, this event is for you.
  4. Although events are a great way to make a day out of the fair and offer a unique experience, don’t miss out on the vendor areas. Shopping at the fair can help you score some unique home décor, gifts and other crafts. Pro tip: bring a set amount of money.
