Land Rovers are engineered to get through even the most extreme elements, whether that’s crawling over a boulder in Moab, Utah, or powering through a blizzard in Lake Tahoe. While many Land Rovers may never ford a 2-foot-deep stream, the vehicle’s impressive capabilities cement its rugged status. And, with the introduction of Land Rover’s new 2015 Discovery Sport, not only is this go-anywhere SUV now more accessible, but it also delivers a distinct luxury edge.
From the curb, the 2015 Discovery Sport shows off a chiseled, geometric shape that’s defined on the side by a dramatically styled rear door that slants forward and stops just short of the floating gloss-black roof. A clamshell hood, distinctive side air intakes and jewel-like headlamps evoke the top-of-the-line Range Rover model, though the Discovery Sport can be had for less, starting at just $37,995. The fully loaded Discovery Sport HSE Luxury version, which adds a premium 11-speaker sound system, Windsor leather seats, and a slew of other detail and technology touches, goes for $45,570.
The standard Discovery Sport comes well-equipped, with full-time four-wheel drive, a rear camera, electric seats with memory, and premium materials like a soft-touch dash and metallic finishes throughout.
Powering the Discovery Sport is a highly advanced and zippy 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 engine that churns out 240 horsepower. Mated to a new superefficient nine-speed automatic transmission, the SUV returns an impressive 28 mpg on the highway, unique for this segment (especially considering the vehicle’s laudable 7.8-second sprint from 0 to 60 mph). On the road, a new torque-vectoring system nearly eliminates the dreaded understeer of four-wheel-drive vehicles. As with any Land Rover, the Discovery Sport is a brute off-road and comes standard with Land Rover’s Full-Time Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, which automatically sets the proper four-wheel drive settings depending on the surfaces being traversed.
Inside, the Discovery Sport is spacious (and feels so), thanks to an enormous panoramic roof and innovative stadium seating that give every passenger an elevated view of the road ahead, even if seated in the third row. With first-in-class 5+2 seating, this SUV is ideal for active families who occasionally require a few spare seats.
Look for the new Discovery Sport to arrive at Land Rover dealers by the end of the month.
