Carlsbad flower fields

If traffic slows on Interstate 5 near Carlsbad between March 1 and May 10, it’s often because drivers are sneaking a peek at The Flower Fields. The 50-acre site on a hillside overlooking the Pacific is in full bloom then, and who can blame motorists for wanting to catch a glimpse of the spectacular display?

Row upon row of multicolored gladioli, ranunculi, petunias and other flowers carpet the site, which attracts more than 125,000 visitors annually. There’s plenty to do besides walking through the fields, soaking in the beauty and snapping selfies.

Each visitor season offers events and activities such as Kids Day, Zydeco Day, Bluegrass Day, photography workshops, a bonsai show and sale, Mother’s Day celebration, antique tractor wagon rides, and a sweet pea maze. A sluice-mining operation lets you find polished gemstones using the miner’s old method of sifting sand in water. Artisans sell their wares out in the fields, and you can buy fresh cut flowers at the Armstrong Garden Center. You can even learn about practicing water-quality awareness at home at the Water Wise Farming center presented by the University of California Cooperative Extension, San Diego County.

The fields grew from humble flower beds a pioneer family first cultivated more than 85 years ago, and have been owned by just two families ever since. It’s a popular venue for weddings and other special events, and volunteers are welcome to assist with children’s walking tours. LEGOLAND California is just around the corner, as is a premium outlets mall with plenty of shopping and dining choices.
