Things to do in Lompoc

Ever had the urge to get away from it all in a place that’s not too far from urban life? Lompoc just might be your spot.

By the way, it’s not pronounced “Lom-pock” (as in pocket ), which W.C. Fields called it in his radio shows and the 1940 movie “The Bank Dick.” Lompocals have always called it “Lom-poke.”

Situated among low rolling hills on state Route 246 about 10 miles from the coast, and an hour or so each way to Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo via Highway 101, the town of 60,000 has only about five hotels. You can relax in your room or make it home base for visits to historic La Purisima Mission, miles of hiking and biking trails, golfing, motorsports, and horseback riding areas, most for little or no cost.

April gardening

If you followed our March gardening tips, your garden should be almost ready for the upcoming spring planting season. If not, start with our March to-dos before moving on to our April list.

Follow the tips below on what to plant and how to maintain your garden for stunning results this spring.

Assess your garden. Is it ready for planting? Before you put any new plants in the ground, be sure you’ve fully removed all weeds from your garden. If you haven’t, weeds can grow out of control and take over the entire area. Weeds also compete with your new plants for nutrients, water, and sunlight. If you don’t weed your garden, you risk losing many of your plants.

After weeding, place an inch or two of mulch around your annuals or any other plants you intend to keep over the summer. The mulch will help hold in moisture.

Architecture

Moving a house to a new location is formidable enough. But moving an entire city of more than 23,000 people to a new site two miles away? That’s a job paved with logistics of the highest order. But it’s what the residents of Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city, are gearing up for.

The move is necessitated by ongoing extraction at the world’s largest iron mine nearby. Future digging will be go even deeper, which would unsettle the ground under 3,000 homes, city hall, the train station, and a 100-year-old church. So city. officials decided to bite the bullet and work with the state-controlled mine operator to move the whole town–lox, stocks, barrels, homes and buildings–to safer ground east.
