What:
In war and in peace, the Jeep is an American icon recognized around the world. It started out as a military general purpose vehicle or “GP” which, when slurred, sounds like “jeep.” But it has morphed over the years into dozens of styles that are instantly identifiable only as a Jeep.
Some great examples of military and civilian models will be on display at “Jeep-A Favorite of Liberators & Adventurers,” an exhibit now through the end of March at the Murphy Auto Museum in Oxnard. A special Jeep-centric event will be held Jan. 18, featuring basic World War II and Korean War models to the more modern and luxurious Wagoneer. The parking lot will be packed with local Jeep enthusiasts from the Low Range 4×4 Club. Museum admission is free but donations are suggested.

It’s a great time of year on the West Coast for everyone who digs truffles – literally and figuratively.
In January and beyond, festivals and restaurants devoted to the fabulously flavored fungi will be packed with not only those who love the aromatic delicacy, but also those who root them out of the ground.
While truffles are thought to have originated centuries ago in Europe and the Mediterranean region, they are now grown in the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia and Chile. They also are found in their natural habit – orchards and forests — from northern California to southern Washington, which is what the January celebrations are all about.
First up is the fifth annual Napa Truffle Festival, Jan. 16-19, pairing world-class cuisine and cutting-edge science. The festival focuses on two complementary aspects of European truffles: the best chefs on the planet known for truffle cuisine, and international truffle experts and scientists recognized for their expertise and data on truffle cultivation. Fungi foodies and aspiring truffle growers alike will find activities to satisfy their appetite and curiosity.

Louis Pasteur, the renowned 19th-century French chemist, famously dissed oxygen as “the enemy of wine.”
More than a century later, another man of science has come up with a product that bottles up Pasteur’s and other oenophiles’ concerns about oxygen’s degradation of wine’s taste once and for all.
Former MIT nuclear engineer and vascular technologist Greg Lambrecht is the inventor of the Coravin™ Wine Access System, a device that lets you extend the life of virtually any wine bottle’s contents without popping the cork.
As the company’s website puts it: “Wine enthusiasts can now enjoy wine sealed with corks without feeling the need to commit to the whole bottle, allowing them to explore wines of any vintage, varietal or region, one taste at a time.”
