sell your home during the holidays

You’ve got enough to think about during the holidays besides selling your home. Or do you?

If you think about it, putting your home on the market November through January has a lot of advantages. In fact, according to REALTOR.com, 60 percent of REALTORS® advise their clients to list homes during the holidays because they feel it’s such a great time to sell.

While any experienced real estate agent will tell you there’s never a bad month to list your home, the holiday season has been shown to be an ideal time for reasons you might not have considered. Here are just a few of them:

A smaller market

Listing your home during the holidays places it in a smaller pool of what real estate professionals call “inventory.” The lower the inventory of available homes, the higher the likelihood they will attract potential buyers. That’s typically the case in hot markets like Southern California. Of course, factors such as neighborhood, the home’s condition, and mortgage rates play into the equation. Your agent can give you a good estimate of how long it could take to sell, realistic asking price, etc.

lighten up a dark room

It seems like just yesterday that we were celebrating the long days of summer. But as daylight saving time approaches (Nov. 1) and daytime hours begin to shorten for the fall and winter seasons, you might be missing that summertime sunshine. Although you can’t stop the sun from setting earlier, you can make each room in your home feel a bit brighter. After all, not every room is flooded with natural light. Bringing warmth and brightness doesn’t have to be as expensive as creating a new new space for a window. Instead, use optical illusions to create instant brightness in your home. The following tips can be done on almost any budget in a short amount of time.

Create warmth with art

The art you choose for each room  impacts how that room is perceived. For example, if you have a room filled with pictures of snowfalls, the room will feel colder. Create a lighter room by incorporating warm artwork filled with bright colors. Frame photos from a day at the beach, or purchase and paint artwork that reminds you of spring and summer. Avoid black-and-white artwork as creates a cooler, darker setting.

Rancho Santa Fe

The inaugural Rancho Santa Fe Garden Fair & Market was a blooming success thanks to some nurturing from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. Our company was title sponsor of the Oct. 17 event honoring the Balboa Park Centennial.

Celebrating a milestone anniversary

The 100-year anniversary salute featured free landscape consulting, plant and garden gift sales, irrigation district rebates, horticulture presentations, children’s activities, a photo booth, and food trucks with refreshments available for purchase. Special guest presenter Thomas Herrera-Mishler, executive director of the Balboa Park Conservancy, gave a talk on the park’s efforts to incorporate sustainable landscaping techniques.

Proud to provide community support

“Our company and agents recognize how much value the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Fair & Market brings to horticulture and conservation efforts in their community. It was our pleasure to help ensure the success of this much-appreciated event,” said David M. Cabot, our President and CEO.

“Our agents and staff strive to be involved members of the neighborhoods where they live and work. This event is another way we support our community.”

The free event organized by the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club was held at the Rancho Santa Fe Association/Community Center.

Noteworthy home

If you recognize the 1920s-era apartment building turned condo at 3400 San Marino St. in Los Angeles’ Mid Wilshire district, congratulations. You’re a certified movie buff.

Penthouse Unit F in the building, which served as a location for 1954’s “Witness to Murder,” was just sold by sister agents Kim Halverson and Kristine Halverson of our Santa Monica real estate office. The sellers are also pretty well-known, humorist Christian Lander (“Stuff White People Like”) and his wife Jess, an advertising exec.

For more photos and a tour of the home in one of the last great old Hollywood-style residential buildings in L.A., check out Curbed Los Angeles and PopSugar.
