Coronado Christmas Parade

What:
Join Coronado and people from all across San Diego for the 39th Annual Coronado Christmas Parade & Downtown Open House. The fun begins at the Ferry Landing as Santa arrives promptly at 3:20 p.m., and carolers frolic in snow fun at snow mountain. Then, mosey on down to the Hotel del Coronado, where you can experience ice skating like no other — on the beach! Then pick a good spot on Orange Avenue and watch the Coronado Christmas Parade roll by starting at 6 p.m. Orange shuts down to traffic and becomes a Christmas wonderland. Stop by the shops along Orange before and after the parade. They’ll have treats and festivities to make holiday shopping a memorable and relaxing time. At 7 p.m., be at Rotary Park (near the Visitor Center at 1100 Orange Ave.,) when the Christmas tree will be lit for the holiday season. The Community Band will be on hand to set the festive mood.

If you’re like us, the arrival of family for the holidays brings equal parts bliss and butterflies. How will you entertain Aunt Agatha for a week? Our solution? Take in a show. Sometimes, a few hours side-by-side in the dark is the perfect version of family togetherness. Here’s five productions that are not to miss.

  1. La Jolla Playhouse’s staging of The Hunchback of Notre Dame (tickets from $15) is magical—just what you’d expect from a show in special arrangement with Disney Theatrical Productions. Based on both the animated film and Victor Hugo’s 19th century novel, it’s darker than Disney, pulling no punches in its depiction of the tortured relationship between hunchback Quasimodo and his pious “protector,” Frollo, the Archdeacon of Notre Dame. Musical numbers soar, especially with the addition of S.D. chorus SACRA/PROFANA, and the heartbreaking conclusion includes spectacular theatrics deserving of their inevitable standing ovation. Through Dec. 14.

Kitchen knife care

Save your holiday meals before they even start with these handy tips.

With all the cost and time that go into the perfect holiday meal, from selecting the turkey or ham to preparing the vegetables and setting the table, there is one small aspect of the celebration that usually goes overlooked until it is far too late.

That small aspect? The sharpness and cutting quality of your knives! Too many people have discovered to their great chagrin that their cutlery simply won’t cut it. Butchered carvings and clumsy chopping will destroy the atmosphere of a holiday gathering, but you will be armed and ready by following these handy tips:

  1. First things first: Make sure you have the right knife for the job you need. Slicing a turkey, chopping onions, and cutting bread require different-sized knives and edges. Carving knives are usually medium-sized, with broad, sharp edges to make cutting through dense muscles smooth and easy. Bread knives are long and thin, with a specially serrated blade that allows you to cut the bread without too much pressure that crushes and ruins it. Vegetable knives can appear similar to carving knives, but they often feature a rounded blade to facilitate smooth chopping. (more…)
