Keeping a 13,000-square-foot real estate office with about 100 desks, offices and meeting rooms filled with successful agents can be quite a challenge.
Unless you’re Chuck Sackett, manager of the La Mesa/El Cajon office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. With a real estate career launched in 1972, Chuck is chief recruiter for the sprawling agency overlooking Interstate 8. He came out of retirement a few years ago to bring strong leadership to the brokerage, and hasn’t left since.
“Recruiting is a major part of my responsibilities,” he said. ““I really enjoy that part of it. It’s a different day every day. Having so many people in the office, they’ve all got something they might need assistance with. So it’s fun to be able to help them out. It’s not necessarily that they need the answer, it’s that they need somebody to ratify that they’re doing the right thing. And giving new people the opportunity to make a pretty good living is very gratifying. You can do it out here if you apply yourself.”

The decision to rappel down San Diego’s tallest waterfront hotel might not be an easy one for some people, but Berkshire Hathaway California Properties real estate agent Carlos Gutierrez sees it as an excellent way to raise awareness for the fight against brain cancer. With his participation in Over the Edge, an event featuring 82 volunteers venturing down the Grand Hyatt San Diego, Gutierrez personally helped raise $4,700 for the Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure organization, making a strong contribution to the event total of $200,000.
The event was completely sold out and featured a number of local celebrities, such as Hannah and Susie Nancarrow, family of Loren Nancarrow, Maria Parker, a record setting long-distance cyclist, and Monika Carlson, a brain tumor survivor. Spectators gathered by the pool at the Grand Hyatt for high-energy entertainment, food, and fitness opportunities.
“This was an incredibly memorable experience and a great chance to support the fight against brain cancer,” said Gutierrez.

“I am hoping this will bring laughter and joy where it’s needed most,” said Lisa Straza when asked about her Santa Toy Box, a toy drive that is slated to run from November 24 through December 15. Straza is partnering with several local businesses to coordinate the drive, which will benefit St. Germaine Children’s Charity.
Unopened toys can be dropped off at Margaret’s Cleaners and Carmel Valley Pharmacy, as well as Anthony’s Luggage and Shoe Repair. “I would like to extend a heartfelt note of gratitude to the local businesses that have chosen to partner with me,” commented Straza. “I can’t imagine a group of people more deserving of our kindness and generosity than abused children.”
