Wine tasting innovation

When you think of wine tasting, what comes to mind? For many, it might be a whole event or afternoon production. First, you head to a local winery or tasting room and begin your sensory adventure. Your day is filled with the sweet and dry aromas and tastes of various grapes and assorted blends. Between samples, you cleanse the palate with water and maybe even a pretzel or cracker. By the end of your tasting afternoon, you’re ready to leave with a few bottles of some of the delicious wines you’ve sampled and hand-selected.

Wheels and Waves began 16 years ago, but after just two years, the highly successful car show outgrew the space on Cabrillo Boulevard. Growing from 65 cars to 410 cars, the show now takes place at Santa Barbara City College. This year’s show will be dedicated to one of the original founders, Dick Howitt. In his honor, registration has been cut down for this year’s event and a special surprise is bound to be one of the show’s highlights.

If you or your child has a fascination for aviation, you’ll want to check out the second annual Santa Ynez Airport Day. Last year, more than 25 local pilots displayed their aircraft and discussed their love of aviation. Kids up to age 18 can participate in the “Young Eagles” event and get a free airplane ride. Questions about aeronautics, aerospace, airline careers, learning to fly, and more will be answered by experts. In addition to giving local students and visitors the opportunity to learn from pilots in an up-close and personal way, the Airport Authority will host a free hamburger and hot dog barbecue for all.

Celebrate half a century of local creativity at the Santa Barbara Arts & Craft Show. In fact, the next show becomes the longest-running event of its kind anywhere in the world. Each year for the past 50, artisans and crafters have filled the beachfront along Cabrillo Boulevard, amazing and delighting locals with their skill and dedication to their art. This year will be no different, and is the perfect opportunity for the whole family to come out and see hundreds of local artisans promoting, selling, and creating their wares. This year’s concept draws from the tradition of European sidewalk art shows and the Jardin del Arte in Mexico City, and will feature more than 200 displays, a free concert, and anniversary celebrations all weekend.

Santa Barbara water rebates

The water shortage in California has reached crisis status. Gov. Jerry Brown recently took the unprecedented step of ordering mandatory water restrictions to achieve a 25 percent reduction in urban water usages throughout the state. With California’s hottest and driest months ahead, we all need to do our part to ensure that we have enough water to drink, fight fires, and irrigate the crops that bring in billions of dollars to the state. Unfortunately, while water demand rises, supply continues to shrink.

Therefore, municipal governments throughout the state are stepping up to help residents find new, innovative, and cost-effective ways to reduce water consumption in non-disruptive ways. Industry, agriculture, and population place significant strains on the water reserves.
