On Nov. 8, 2014 team members from Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties laced up their sneakers, filled their water bottles and hit the road to help raise money and awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. This devastating neurodegenerative condition afflicts tens of thousands of Americans each year, and unfortunately there is no cure.

With the holiday travel season rapidly approaching, it might be wise to take a few moments to consider some of the most common ways to keep your home safe while you visit relatives and friends across the country or around the world. Statistically speaking, you’re at a higher risk of a break-in while you’re away for an extended period, but there are five simple things you can do to help ensure that your fall and winter holidays stay merry and bright:

  1. Arrange to stop your newspaper delivery. Nothing gives a bigger signal to criminals than a pile of papers on your front door.
  2. Have a neighbor or friend collect your mail for you while you’re gone. If that’s not feasible, contact the post office to halt delivery until you return.
  3. Notify the police that you will be out of town. Many municipalities have the ability to dispatch community patrols or officers who can take extra time to make sure your home stays safe. Also, if there are any incidents in your neighborhood or at your property, they can plan their response accordingly.

Keeping a 13,000-square-foot real estate office with about 100 desks, offices and meeting rooms filled with successful agents can be quite a challenge.

Unless you’re Chuck Sackett, manager of the La Mesa/El Cajon office of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties. With a real estate career launched in 1972, Chuck is chief recruiter for the sprawling agency overlooking Interstate 8. He came out of retirement a few years ago to bring strong leadership to the brokerage, and hasn’t left since.

“Recruiting is a major part of my responsibilities,” he said. ““I really enjoy that part of it. It’s a different day every day. Having so many people in the office, they’ve all got something they might need assistance with. So it’s fun to be able to help them out. It’s not necessarily that they need the answer, it’s that they need somebody to ratify that they’re doing the right thing. And giving new people the opportunity to make a pretty good living is very gratifying. You can do it out here if you apply yourself.”
