Southern California matchmakers

Whether you’re a single looking for a soulmate or a couple seeking to rekindle the flames of romance, the upcoming three-day Valentine’s Day weekend is fraught with possibilities. Dinner for two? Dinner alone? Box of chocolates for your sweetie? Or gobble a box for your private pity party?

We asked two well-known Southern California matchmaking specialists for advice about how to make the best of what can be either a tough or terrific time for those on both sides of Cupid’s arrow.

“If you’re a couple, you’ve got the money and are successful, get out of town, do the weekend deal,” said Patti Stanger, aka “The Millionaire Matchmaker” on Bravo TV. “Take a day trip. Find the cute little country town that’s not too far from your house. Go into nature, go for a hike. If it’s cold and snowy, you can get a cabin in the woods with fires brewing. Think romance. It’s the one time of year it falls on a three-day weekend, so utilize it.

super bowl party

There are few occasions that call out for good beer and good food like the Super Bowl. This contest of gladiators of the gridiron brings out a hunger and thirst like no other, and if you are hosting a party or get-together of any sort you better bring your “A” game for the biggest game of the year. Depending on what you’re serving, you should probably stock up on a wide variety to beers and snacks for your Super Bowl party:

  • Wings: Wings are a foundation of just about any get-together involving football, and nowhere are they more important than at the big game party. However, to get the most out of them and maximize their spicy, smoky, and savory flavors, it’s best to pair wings with a beer such as an American-style India Pale Ale (IPA).
  • Brats and dogs: These football staples deserve to be front and center at any Super Bowl party, but few people know which beers truly complement their unique flavors. Though every culture has some form of sausage, why not go right to the source and pick a German beer for your party? Try a beer that won’t overwhelm the flavor, such as a Marzen or even an Austrian Bohemian-style lager, to make your dogs really bark.

James Hill

Looking for a piece of art that gets noticed inside or outside your home, office, or even office building? Los Angeles-based metal sculptor James Hill could have what you have in mind.

From graceful and whimsical to bold and enduring, Hill’s installations can be found in private collections and public spaces around California. Actor Ed Harris and Google co-founder Sergey Brin have one. So does Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, among other medical facilities in the area.

Originally from Claremont, 52-year-old Hill specializes in steel, stainless-steel and bronze commissions he builds solo in his studio at the Brewery Art Complex in downtown L.A., touted as the world’s largest artist-in-residence community with about 320 spaces in 20 buildings.

hometown favorites

It’s that super time of year again, when two teams of modern gladiators combat for the ultimate sports bragging right: Super Bowl Champion. Only one team will hoist aloft the vaunted Lombardi Trophy, but they won’t get there unless they load up on their hometown’s favorite foods.

If you’re planning your Super Bowl party early, you might want to consider some of these fabulous feasts for your dining pleasure.

Perennial favorites New England Patriots find themselves once again in the national spotlight at the Super Bowl. If you want to share a bit of hometown flavor at your revelry, think about adding some Boston clam chowder to the mix, and some of Beantown’s world-famous legumes are an always-delightful addition to the fare of any party.
