Climb aboard a real Coast Guard cutter and learn what it takes to be safe on the sea at the Channel Islands Harbor Safe Boating Day Expo. View the proficiency of maritime rescue operations with two offshore air, sea, and fire rescue demonstrations conducted by several agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard and Ventura County public safety departments. There will be safety demonstrations throughout the day, as well as booths and displays, from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Red Cross, and the National Weather Service.

With Mother’s Day approaching, there’s no lack of ways to show Mom your appreciation before, on, or after May 10. Of course there are the standard brunches, flowers, and boxes of candy. But why not consider something less predictable? Here are some suggestions for making Mom’s day memorable:
- Listen to some legends: Musician Herb Alpert and vocalist Lani Hall headline the Ventura Music Festival May 8 with songs from their best-selling albums at Ventura High School Theatre. The festival is one of the county’s signature events, attracting upwards of 6,000 concertgoers each season. Kitchen blenders have come a long way since Stephen J. Poplawski, owner of Stevens Electric Co. in Racine, Wisconsin, began designing drink mixers in 1919. He patented them in 1922, along with a liquefier blender, and soon they were in use at soda fountains around the country to whip up malted milkshakes.
Fifteen years later, the Vitamix company–which had made kitchen products since 1921–introduced its own heavy-duty version of the blender. In 1949, the company hit the big time after showcasing its blender in the world’s first TV infomercial.
