Apple tree

There are few things better than fresh fruit from your own garden. You can bake the fruit into a pie, toss it in a salad, or just snack on it.

In Southern California, there’s a wide variety of fruit trees that flourish and produce sweet, delicious fruit. Fruit trees, however, can be a bit tricky. You need to have the right soil, the right amount of sunlight, the right chill exposures, and much more. But once you’ve figured out how to care for your precious fruit trees, the reward will be worth the effort.

First, determine if there is enough space for your trees. Fruit trees need to be roughly three to six feet away from buildings and sidewalks. You won’t want your roots running into cement or the base of your house, and you won’t want to risk the tree damaging your home when it grows taller and wider. You will also want to make sure your trees have about ten or more feet of space between each before you plant.

Then, assess the land in your yard. What spots in your yard get at least six hours of sun a day during growing season? Make sure buildings or other trees don’t block direct sunlight.

When it comes to homes in Southern California, most people tend to imagine coastal homes that boast ocean views. Contrary to popular belief, homes in Southern California don’t need to be accompanied by coastal breezes in order to be special.

We decided it was time to praise some of these amazing properties, beginning with ones that are equestrian-friendly.

Any property is home to horses must also have enough land for these stunning animals to roam, plus adequate water and level space for a barn. The amount of land you have can also determine how many horses you are allowed to keep on your property. If you are looking to buy an equestrian property, tell your agent right away so they can find a listing that fits your needs.

Here are some of our favorite current equestrian homes for sale in Southern California:

Water conservation

It might be summer, but that doesn’t mean the grades have stopped going out. California cities are being tested and graded on their water-conservation efforts, thanks to Gov. Jerry Brown’s executive order that calls for Californians to reduce their water usage by 25 percent. If you don’t know what the order means for you, check out our guide to water restrictions for more information.

Since the order took effect on June 1, some cities and communities have been passing the new standards with flying colors. Although this is great news,  some communities could still use a little extra tutoring, and we’d like to help by showing you what some of the most successful communities are doing.

Some of the A+ students in the South Coast Water Region are:

Santa Ana, ranked as the fourth most water-conscious city according to the California State Water Resources Control Board, has been saving thousands of gallons of water every day. The average resident in Santa Ana uses only 47.5 gallons a day. Because of its water smarts, Santa Ana has decreased its water usage by an impressive 19.9%, conserving over 238 million gallons a month.
