The winter home of one of America’s captains of industry is on the market in Pasadena for $6,880,000. The historic Merritt Mansion was built for Hulett C. Merritt, a business partner of John D. Rockefeller, with whom he invested in mining, railroads, and steamships in the Great Lakes.

The estate at 380 West Green Street was created on four acres for $1,100,000 between 1905 and 1908 on what was locally called “Millionaires’ Row.” Today, the 17,329-square-foot Mediterranean Revival-style house sprawls across a 1.8-acre lot with access to the shared amenities of the Ambassador Gardens community, including its swimming pool and 2.1-acre Great Lawn. The residence has retained its original mahogany wood paneling on the first and second floors, and its private sunken garden.

Born in Duluth, Minnesota, in 1872, Merritt joined the board of directors of U.S. Steel at age 28, and became its largest common stockholder. He also served as its chairman. He built the Merritt Building in downtown Los Angeles in 1915, and later owned an antique store in Pasadena. He died in Santa Barbara in 1956.
